乔治·萨顿(George Sarton，1884～1956)，出生于比利时，但是在美国成就了他的事业。正是在他手中，科学史最终成为一门正式学科。1913年他创办了著名科学史杂Isis，并担任主编长达40年。1940年他被任命为哈佛大学的科学史教授。人们认为他创造了科学史这门学科的“工具、标准以及批判的自觉性”，故誉之为“科学史之父”。萨顿生前出版了15部专著，发表了340多篇论文和札记，编辑了79份详尽的科学史重要研究文献目录。这些都是他留给后人的珍贵遗产。
